Founded by Henry Gerster-Stevens, the business was built on innovation, hard work, and a commitment to helping customers protect their tools and equipment. Following Henry’s passing, Site Safe® continues to operate as a family business, with his children carrying forward his vision and values while continuing to grow and develop the company for the future.
Site Safe® began with a simple goal, to build a better future through hard work and innovation. In the early 1970s, after years of factory work and raising a young family, our founder began searching for new opportunities. Working night shifts while exploring business ideas during the day, he spent several years trading various goods before building his very first mobile site office to hire to builders on construction sites. This marked the beginning of Mobile Shed Co.
The first site office was delivered to a construction project in Bacchus Marsh on 22 April 1974, the founder’s birthday, a milestone that would launch what would become a long-standing Australian business. In those early days, transport cost just $5 each way, a stark contrast to today. As demand grew, the business expanded from a single unit to a growing fleet of site offices. With Claire managing the office and administration while deliveries, construction, repairs and maintenance were handled on the ground, the small family operation steadily gained momentum. Work soon followed from major organisations including VicRail, which led to a pivotal moment for the company.
After seeing the time and labour required to move traditional storage sheds between worksites, the idea for a better solution was born. The result was the design of the first SiteSafe security storage unit, a purpose-built, portable storage shed featuring a sliding door, secure locking system, shelves and hanging hooks, allowing it to be delivered to site ready for immediate use. Following patent, design and trademark applications, SiteSafe was officially launched in 1986. The product quickly proved to be an instant success, prompting the company to rebrand from Mobile Shed Co. to Site Safe®, reflecting its innovative new security storage solution.
Over the following decades the range expanded, with additional container sizes and improved patented locking systems developed to suit a wide variety of site storage needs. Specialised units for flammable liquids and gas storage were also introduced, alongside a fleet of 6-metre shipping containers, some extended to 6.25 metres with pipe racks to accommodate longer materials. Today, Site Safe® proudly supplies secure storage solutions to the construction industry, government departments, and defence organisations across Australia.
Now operating from our facility in Derrimut, Victoria, just off the Western Ring Road, Site Safe® continues to grow with a dedicated team and an expanding range of products. With more than 50 years of industry experience, we remain committed to the same values that started the business, practical innovation, reliability, and helping our customers keep their sites secure.
The journey that began with one mobile shed has grown into a trusted name in site security storage and the future of Site Safe® continues to build.
Henry Gerstner-Stevens 1935 – 2024
It is with deep respect that we honour the life and legacy of Henry Gerstner-Stevens, founder of Site Safe® and a pioneer in Australia’s construction support industry.
In the early 1970s, Henry began building and hiring mobile site offices to builders. His determination and practical thinking laid the foundation for what would become Site Safe®. Always looking for better solutions on site, Henry later designed a secure storage unit with a sliding door, shelving and locking system, an innovation that led to the creation of the Site Safe® security storage shed.
In 2025, Site Safe® proudly celebrated 50 years in operation, a testament to Henry’s vision and perseverance.
Today, the company remains a proud Australian family business, with Henry’s children continuing his legacy and commitment to quality, service and innovation.
